· Avoid aggressive driving
High speed cruising consumes a lot of petrol, we know that for a fact, but more so does harsh braking and “jack-rabbit’ starting. This kind of driving also increases fuel consumption by as much as 40% and toxic emissions went up to 5 times higher than normal. The proper way to accelerate is slowly and smoothly while you get into high gear as quickly as possible.
· Drive steadily (avoid accelerating quickly)
STOP playing with the accelerator pedal! Driving at a constant cruising speed (please follow the speed limit and not go over it) saves fuel as you are not constantly braking and accelerating. Remember smooth, slow and steady wins the race!
· Avoid idling
In Malaysia, it is hard not to idle because our weather is very hot. But, idling not only wastes fuel it also produces greenhouse gases that is really detrimental to the environment. If you need to stop, other than in traffic, turn off the engine, step out of the car and get yourself a “teh tarik” while you wait.
· Make sure tyres are properly inflated
Who would have known that an under-inflated tyre causes fuel consumption to increase by as much as 6%! Inflate your tire to the recommended tyre pressure and check on them every once a month. Tyre efficiency is said to be able to save approximately 800,000 barrels of oil a day*.
· Use lower octane fuel which is cheaper (check manufacturer spec first)
Most cars do not require high-performance high-octane fuel that often costs a whole lot more than lower octane fuel and higher cost does not necessarily mean better performance. Save cost by checking with your car manual to find out your car requirements.
· Service your car regularly
Just like your body, your car engine needs a regular check-up every few thousand miles. Some are more efficient and only need to be serviced every 20,000 km whilst others may need servicing every 5,000 km. The older the car, the more frequent the need for service. A poorly tuned engine can use up to 50% more fuel and produces 50% more emissions than a well-serviced engine.
· Remove unnecessary weight in car
Lighten up! The less weight a car carries, the less fuel it consumes! An extra 48kgs or so can increase your fuel bill by 2%! So, out with all the unnecessary things - leave your files in the office, it’s not the kids’ library, toy room or even your mobile workshop, leave your bicycle racks at home when not in use, plus a half tank of gas is more than enough to get you around, and it will definitely cut down the weight of fuel your car has to lug around.
· Drive with windows closed (reduced drag)
Friction is a drag and a burden when you are cruising at a steady speed. Make sure the windows are up because the force of the wind created by the car in motion creates a drag that will require you to use up more fuel to keep the speed consistent. Less drag, more fuel efficiency, more savings and less emissions.
